SpeechSmith — Privacy Policy

SpeechSmith is published by Sycamore Hill Studios. This policy explains exactly what the app collects, why, and how to remove it. It describes the app as built — not a generic template.

The short version. There is no account and no sign-up. We do not ask for your name, email, or phone number. We do not use advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs. Your saved speeches live on your phone and are never uploaded. What you type — names, stories, the things you asked us to avoid — is sent to our server to write the speech and is never written into our logs; if your plan includes revisions, a copy is held for at most 24 hours so a revision can be written, and for nothing else.

1. What we collect

This material is treated as sensitive in code — family stories, private jokes and eulogies are personal regardless of who is reading them. Our logging records only the app, the task, how many units it cost, how many characters came back, and a random content id — never what you typed and never the speech, and not even a truncated excerpt. At most 24 hours, and only on a plan with revisions. If your plan includes them, the server keeps your intake and the speech it produced so a revision can be written from exactly the same facts. That copy expires 24 hours after it is written and is not read again afterwards. On the free tier this copy is never written at all.
Your saved speeches The speech text plus the intake it was written from, so you can reuse it as a starting point.	So the library can show your speeches and rebuild the form.	On your device only. Saved speeches are never uploaded. They are removed when you delete a speech, delete your data, or uninstall the app.
Subscription status Whether your subscription is active, in a trial, or lapsed, and when it expires.	To unlock paid features. Verified directly with Google Play.	Until you delete your data or the subscription record expires.
Usage counts How many speeches and revisions you have generated today.	To enforce the free daily allowance.	Rolling daily counters; removed when you delete your data.
Content reports If you report a speech: the reason, an optional comment, and the random id of the reported content.	To review and improve safety filtering. The report does not include your stories — only the random id of the generation, the reason you chose, and anything you chose to type.

2. What we do not collect

No email address, phone number, or postal address. The names you type are used to write the speech and are not treated as an account or matched to anyone.
No contacts, photos, camera, microphone, or location access. The app requests two permissions in total: internet access, and the one Google Play Billing needs to talk to the Play Store app.
No advertising identifier. There are no ads in SpeechSmith.
No third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDK. There is no Firebase Analytics, no Sentry, no Crashlytics, and no third-party tracker in this app.
No payment details. Google Play processes all payments; we never see your card.
No profile of you or of the person you are speaking about, and nothing you type is used to train an AI model.

3. AI-generated content

Speeches are generated by an artificial intelligence model (Microsoft Azure OpenAI). Output is produced automatically and is not reviewed by a person before you see it. It may occasionally be inaccurate, odd, or not to your taste — read yours through before you deliver it. Every speech has a Report button; reports are reviewed and used to improve filtering.

SpeechSmith is built for speeches given with the honoree's dignity intact. Our server refuses requests to humiliate someone or to write for a deception, keeps humour on shared memories rather than a person's appearance, family or identity, and writes eulogies in a warm and dignified register unless you say gentle humour would be welcome.

4. Who processes your data

Microsoft Azure (including Azure OpenAI) — hosts our server and writes the speeches. Data is processed in the United States (East US 2). Azure OpenAI does not use this content to train its models.
Google Play — processes payments and tells us whether your subscription is valid. See Google's own privacy policy for how they handle it.

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising.

5. Deleting your data

Open Settings → Delete my data in the app. This removes the daily usage counters and the subscription record held for your device on our server, and wipes your saved speeches and the saved entitlement from the phone. It takes effect immediately.

The 24-hour revision copy described above is not part of any profile and is never read after it expires; because it is keyed to a specific speech, it stops being usable once the 24 hours pass.

Deleting your data does not cancel a subscription — subscriptions are managed by Google Play. To cancel, use Settings → Manage subscription, or the Subscriptions section of the Play Store app.

6. Writing about other people

A speech is about someone else, so what you type will usually include their name and stories about them. Please only enter what you would be comfortable saying out loud in front of them — which, given you are about to, is the right test. We do not use those details for anything except writing and revising the speech you asked for, we never build a record of the person, and nothing about them is retained beyond the 24-hour window described above.

7. Children

SpeechSmith is not directed to children. It is intended for an adult audience and is not part of Google Play's Designed for Families programme. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has used the app, contact us and we will remove the associated data.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the UK GDPR, EU GDPR, or the CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your data, and to object to certain processing. Because we hold no account and no contact details, the fastest route is the in-app deletion above. For anything else, email us — we respond to verified requests within 30 days.

Legal basis, where the GDPR applies: we process this data to perform the contract you enter when you use the app (delivering speeches and honouring your subscription), and on the basis of our legitimate interest in preventing abuse and controlling cost.

9. Security

All traffic between the app and our server uses HTTPS. Our server holds no API keys for the AI services; it authenticates using managed workload identity, and key-based access to storage is disabled entirely. On the phone, the app is configured so its data — including your saved speeches — is excluded from cloud backup and device-to-device transfer.

10. Changes

If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top and, where the change affects how your data is used, surface a notice in the app. The 24-hour figure above is a commitment, not a description of current settings: changing it is a change to this policy.
